The ‘People of the Forest’ project has worked with local schools to provide a wide variety of heritage focused activities. These have included exploring World War II sites and airfields, visits to Ancient Woodland and Tudor experiences at Kirby Hall.

From 2006–2008 the project delivered 16 educational events for almost 600 pupils. It also provided 4 days of Living History for the Boughton House Schooldays. Around 4,000 young people from across Northamptonshire discovered about the suffering caused by sheep farming and enclosures, riots and fighting at the Newton Rebellion and the trials and execution of the ringleaders.

The schools programme came to a grand finale in December 2008 when the ‘Winter Festivities’ were held at Kirby Hall (courtesy of English Heritage). Prince William School and the Oundle & Kings Cliffe Middle School provided period music and singing for the 17th century themed event. The students also took part in Elizabethan dancing, learnt to juggle and handled birds of prey.

The project has also worked with local schools to develop educational website resources linked to the National Curriculum. Over the past 2 years several schools have been helped to explore the heritage of their area and our Heritage Resource Centre now includes an Education section that provides guidance and support for schools to continue this work in the future.
