‘Learning about Rockingham Forest’ an educational pack aimed at schoolchildren studying Key Stages 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum (ages 8 13).
The pack consists of an introductory guide to Rockingham Forest and laminated worksheets on a range of topics from village design to woodland crafts. The pack costs £2.95.
The worksheets look at the characteristics that have shaped the development of the Rockingham Forest (its three basic elements: wood, stone and iron). They provide information for pupils to make observations about local settlement, economy and land use and environmental changes that have affected the landscape.
School Visits
(A number of different locations, each visit lasts half a day)
Twywell Hills and Dales a treasure hunt around the site with rhyming clues.
Topics covered are its quarrying history and wildlife, a theme of environmental change.
Gretton Village also a treasure hunt. The visit covers village design, the historical use of buildings and local traditions. In the village hall children undertake a variety of environmental activities (a giant jigsaw, looking at a topical environmental problem etc).
Geddington Village a similar treasure hunt to that at Gretton.
Rawhaw Wood a guided tour around coppiced hazel woodland. The visit covers woodland products, woodland management, food chains and life cycles, and habitats.
Stanwick Lakes a number of activities with the Stanwick Rangers linked to the National Curriculum covering a variety of topics such as environmental change and habitats.
