These projects are now no longer active, however the following is presented as information which may be of use to other organisations in similar circumstances.

The Trust’s involvement in building and planning issues was particularly relevant as the area came under increasing pressure to meet housing demand in the wider South East. The following information outlines the role of the Trust in influencing new development.
Community Planning Network

The Trust offered support to people wishing to get involved in local building and planning issues. The Community Planning Network aimed to help people share experiences and skills in using the planning system.  The overall aim was for new development to respect local needs and character. We held regular workshops, training, and social events which were open to everyone.

Building on Tradition

The Trust has produced a Countryside Design Summary to ensure that new building respects the distinctive character of villages and market towns in the Forest.  The summary provides detailed guidance on all aspects of local building design, from materials and features to the layout of streets and landscaping.  It is now being used by local authorities when considering planning applications and by local communities in commenting on them.  Copies of Building on Tradition are available from the Trust at a cost of £5.00.

Village Design Statements

The Community Planning Network Project supported Village Design Statements (VDS) as a way for local people to proactively influence future building in their village.  A VDS is has a similar approach to a Countryside Design Summary but focuses on the character of an individual village. They are also used by Planning Authorities to guide new development.
